A few years back I learned the phrase "What can we learn from this?" It is a question that has to be asked in ministry to have a student-like spirit. Jesus said: ""I am the true vine, and My Father is the vine dresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you." So we have to be willing to learn in every circumstance that Jesus prunes and takes away from our fruits. And this week we have learned that there is 'nothing' we can do to build his church. People are people. What can we say but to continue to bear fruit.
This week was very busy and we spent a lot of time at our desks. We had to sit in front of a computer to study, read, send e-mails, Skype, etc. We are blessed to be able to use these technologies for ministry. At one point we had Evelyn from Leon with us at home while "Skyping" with Princeton in England and Dani together with us from Lubbock. It was good conversation and a celebration with Dani for her birthday. Also, we have communicated with our sponsors and friends about our upcoming trip to Ecuador. And since it is the end of the semester my classes are having last assignments due soon. Thanks to all of you who have used these moments to bless us and give us a time to see God at work with you.
On Saturday our youth had decided to celebrate our kids. Mexico celebrates Children's Day with much enthusiasm. So the church did a great job with taking the initiative to prepare for a good day. For a missionary it is a blessing to see that we are not part of ministries like these. They had around 40 kids and although some of them wanted us to be present and more involved, we believe it was good for them to do it without us. In ministry learning to do what is right sometimes appears to be what is wrong. This is the kind of fruit that Jesus is wanting people to produce just from being connected to Him and not to a missionary.
In addition to this, on Sunday we were blessed to see that honoring one another is a blessing. Rafa took some time to honor his cousin for turning 15 years old. She has had a hard life and to be able to reach 15 was a big deal, but it was once again a learning experience that we can appreciate God for making our congregation so loving to one another. Once again, I just observed and it is fulfilling to see ministries happening without us being there the whole time.
After being here in Leon and working with the Leon Sur congregation, I can testify that there has been more learning on my part from them than what they have learned from me. The interaction between many ministries that happen during the week and our celebration on Sunday is very complex, but good. When we post we do not talk about how people are discouraged, how marriages are being broken, how youth are being pulled away from God, or how our congregation fluctuates in membership. All these things are real and true also and we know that it is part of mission work, but to only talk about the good and the great comforts us and makes it (both the good and bad things) a learning experience.
Our prayer is that the congregations will continue to build on each other's spiritual giftedness and they can be connected to Jesus. Even though we might be pruned, we pray that much fruit can still be bared. There still needs to be much learned and we thank you for making it possible for us to be here and to be able to learn.
HE IS THE TRUE VINE!

We are so blessed to have Maicah in our lives! He celebrated his birthday this week, and we are glad to see his love for God and us grow. Many people love him, and we do too. We thank God for him!
But we would like to share some other news:
6 years old!
*********************************
"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
1 John 1:8-9
Also, this week, the Lord has answered many prayers. The church in Leon Sur continues to make choices. WE still do not have a church building, and our leadership is very weak. So in order to make some better choices some of us decided to sell most of what we have at the church building. The Lord blessed Leon Sur with enough material blessings. And since they are not being used, we repacked and organized most of the churches resources. In the last years we have served as a place to share God's blessings. WE had crayolas, books, bibles, kid's classes, papers, craft materials, decorations, and more. All that was sorted and placed in boxes. As a missionary it is hard to see these layers of the original church be in dismantlement. So the only thing I can say is that our sinfulness has produced fruits that need to be pruned, changed, and adapted for the glory of God. Out of a church with many professionals, adults, and people who make a living daily - the church has lost the vision to do what it was planted to do. In the next Sundays we will regroup and continue with those who want to be a community in the middle of these trials.
The Lord must have a plan.To place this in perspective. WE had four or five families full time working in Leon Sur, plus we had some 26 AIM students (apprentice Missionaries) who have helped. In addition to these people we have had many ministries that brought people to God, but not to each other. As the sustainability of the missionaries depleted the body begun to shrink. It is not to say that God did not produce fruits. Because he did. Now the church is not a full grown body. Academics struggles to identify whether a church can be institutionalized or simple organic. But at the end of the day either way of "doing church" contains sins. These sins are what produce a lack of commitment, decisions, and continual ministry. We have seen it. For example when the Church Leon Sur was at its peak in ministry every one was smiling, happy, encouraged, and most of all in a state of "doing church right." But it was a façade. In the core we are certain that God worked, produced what needed to be in his body - including sin. Even us the missionaries are sinful.
The apostle John reminds us:
"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us."
At the moment it is an unknown situation. The church needs to find a place to meet soon. Our current place has a contract until June 15th. And all the stuff has to be taken somewhere. In this predicament, we have started a shrinking of what we do not need. Some of the families cleaned the building to have a garage sale on Saturday. People loved the cheap stuff, everyone was placing bids on what they wanted, people asked if we could do this more often, and we even heard that the church had way too much stuff and this was a good thing. But as for me....well.....it is extremely disappointing.
Do you know how much we labored for the church to have what it had? A herd of people have labored endless hours to bring chairs, fans, clothing, shelves, tables, etc. It is almost like having an estate sale after a loved one passes away. Do not get me wrong, We are not materialistic. God giveth and he taketh away.... :) The key message in this post is that the church had to become what it needed to be. And we did not see this coming.
The story is not finally written. The seven years of fat cows is over - the time of wealth and awesome growth passed. And now we are living the seven years of the thin cows. Those who keep their faith in the physical will whither, move away, to to another church, and sadly some will loose their faith. Every church is wasteful and fruit is wasted constantly. My post is to "confess" our sins. And he "will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
BTW - Ivan and Isa, Roberto and Esperanza have done all the work. These two couples are amazing workers in his kingdom. We have many people who are in the margins looking, staring, and only engaging when necessary. Our prayer is that every one in Leon Sur will be confessional in order to be purified. Pray for me, the church, and the city of Leon.

This week we celebrated our anniversary. The Lord has given us many years together in ministry. Our relationship was started while we both were learning how to be missionaries. It was a time to learn as apprentices but God was at work with more than we were expecting. When we see that in the last fourteen years we had our ups and downs we know that being in his presence is about holding on to his hand in love. We praise him for what he has done, and we cannot wait for another fourteen.
Thanks Tana for your service and sacrifice in the Lord's work, and to be with me for so long when it has been hard, easy, fun, boring, etc.
Thanks Tana for your service and sacrifice in the Lord's work, and to be with me for so long when it has been hard, easy, fun, boring, etc.
The hardest aspect of church work for us has been to be in the back seat of the Leon Sur leading group. Our struggle to be passive in action but active in prayer has taught us much. The elders, leaders, and the whole congregation in the face of it looks good. But in the direction and power behind what the future holds is very vulnerable. Paul reminds us that: "That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:10)
If we would not be willing to see that what God is doing far beyond what we can do. Then we would not be willing to say that this happened since the beginning of our Leon experience. The same weakness, struggles, and choices had to be endured in the last decade. It is a roller coaster experience that many forget to talk about. Church work is not only the good times, good fun experience, or even a good time eating. At its core is the sin found in all of us. And this sin leads to death.
The Leon Sur congregation has decided in their leaders to make a transition to a new building this June 15th. The contract is being worked on by the elders alone. And the congregation is behind them.
On a lighter note, our congregation was invited to join this last week to a youth camp. And we are very blessed to have Ivan and Isa lead our group. The amazing part is that this young couple although they have a young son have done amazing work. They both work full time jobs, help members, and minister to many. They teach the youth every Sunday, and take time off their schedule to drive six hours away to camp with them. Sadly, most of those who should be going with them camping do not go. Excuses are always easy to find when we do not want to do something. For for those who are in this picture was a blessed time. It was a week-end where they met young men and women from other congregations and experienced some of the differences among churches. And I am sure we all know what this looks like. We hope to continue to see these kinds of ministries develop with people going the extra mile.
Also, this Saturday we had some of the members come to the house to grill and fellowship. The reason was to celebrate Rafael's and Evelyn's returned from Scotland as AIMers. WE were disappointed that some members did not come. But those who joined were a blessing to each other and us. In Mission Work we have learned that people love God but not each other. But this cannot be real. So when we see people come together is encouraging.
Rafa and Evelyn have done a great job as AIM students. They served the Lord in Europe for almost two years with good stories, blessings, and endurance to finish strong. Rafa will be here in Leon working with his family, because in December will be marrying Tara in Texas. Evelyn will be in Leon for a while with family. Please pray for them, as well as the congregation so they can have more times where they can learn from one another in God's love.
Our prayer is that Leon Sur can begin to move forward to Christ. But as we know there are struggles and choices being made that can alter the outcome. Vulnerability is good. It challenges us to be faithful, dedicated, and filled with the Holy Spirit's presence to guide us. If these reports would be honest about the weakness, struggles, etc then we would not call it good news. But when Paul asked Jesus to fix this, our Lord answered:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Praise God for our weaknesses. For his power is perfected in us.

"how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?"
Jesus (Matthew 17:17)
In the last months we have had a roller coaster stressful time. These moments are expected. We prepared and got times set aside to be ready to encounter moments of doubt, fear, or even disorientation. The truth is that we are overconfident that our strategies are the answers to all these conflicts. Leon Sur has been under the leadership of elders that have done a good job. But all that was planted by the missionaries is not being done. In other words the church is falling apart slowly layer by layer. The reality of what God does in his church has to be objectively presented. Many times we are overly hopeful and our desire for things to move forward is not the reality the body lives.

In other words the church is falling apart slowly layer by layer. The reality of what God does in his church has to be objectively presented. Many times we are overly hopeful and our desire for things to move forward is not the reality the body lives.
What I am saying is that many people (more then you would expect) are not following their giftedness, their role in church, and their relationship with God is dead. For example the church now has no place to meet. WE are ending our contract with the building we have now at Leon Sur on June 15th. And the three options the elders presented are all gone. It is discouraging to see that people do not seek to improve and move to a larger vision. Leon Sur is shrinking in its vision. Jesus is at work, and those who are called need to be sent. Divisive spirits, lazy desires to serve, a lack of desire to learn, little fellowship, and poor administration are a few of the struggles our church is dealing with. The church has a store room filled with dust, from ten cells a week now there is not one, from 100 people in attendance we had 35 in average in the last weeks, bible class attendance is half, we have had no baptism in over six months, there is nothing planned in our Sunday worship for spirituality, events are not placed on a calendar, our offering is lower every week, etc. The church is depleting so pray for us. WE know that the hope is placed in what we know is eternal and spiritual. But if some one is able to asses the church it is me. We had the blessing to see the first days, and we know with our departure coming soon, the church will be worse. The small remnant is moving forward and praying for all this and they want the church to continue, but it is hard. How needed is a missionary?
Also, this week, we had the blessing to see Jonathan and Cris from Morelia. These two are from Venezuela but they work with the church in Morelia. He is a bible student in the school of Houston, and they are great servants of God. They came to spend the week end so we took the time to share our vision, love, and fellowship with them. WE visited the city of Guanajuato, and had a blessed time with them. Please pray for their choices as time goes by quickly for them. He is graduating from the school this December, and they are in prayer to know what God has in plans for them. We know that what ever they will do is going to be a good ministry.
On Sunday the Leon Sur church and the Libertad Church decided to have a time at the park together to play soccer, games, and fellowship. In the midst of all the struggle for Leon Sur it was a blessing to see people come together and play for a while. WE had the time to see many people converse and we hope to have more moments like this. For us is hard to not have expectations fulfilled. Struggles are expected, but the work we do is dealing with people so failure is inevitable. Walking in the light has to be more than just a fun time. WE praise God for a great week. But we are aware that this is not over. The church in Leon Sur needs a new place to meet fast, we will begin to sell a few of the things we have at the church, there are walls that need to be painted, things to be cleaned, and slowly get rid of many things that took much effort to get, but we are willing to do whatever is needed. And if we need to meet in a park every Sunday we will do it.
La Libertad Church is growing and they continue to meet at Alfonso's house. In the last weeks Chris Reid came to visit them. And he will be here in Leon for a month or so. This church is a very new church and they are have done a great work for a year or so. Our prayer is that they will be in a better place to continue to meet with love.
Please do not be overcritical about the report for this week. Also, do not share the negativity shared here to increase in sinfulness. On the contrary pray for the maturity of our elders and church. It is a disappointment to see adults who are children in their actions. And for us, we are staring to think we are not needed anymore in Leon.

Every November for the last 8 years we have been blessed in being able to see brothers and sisters come together for a retreat in Mexico. I do not know all the information of when this type of retreat started here in Mexico, but I am glad that it did. For the second time it was our turn to organize it so we decided to retreat in Ixtapa at a hotel for three days. The time to come together was a blessing this year because we saw people come from Guadalajara, Mexico City, Toluca, Leon, Cuernavaca, Lazaro Cardenas and Morelia Mexico. We had hoped even more missionaries and workers in other parts of Mexico would come, publishing the information in Facebook and blogs and we hope that the next one will see even more workers in Mexico coming together to renew.
It is important to make a note that we did not just go to the beach for three days, although that is obviously part of it. It was a time to reconnect with one-another, revive our spiritual disciplines and walk with God, and to renew are visions in the extended work we do all over Mexico. Many times mission work is a stressful situation, constantly dealing with problems and people and their different lives. We praise God for bringing 30+ adults and 15 children together.
One of the best things in the retreat is to see the children playing together and being with other third-culture kids that can understand each other. Also, the AIM students always bring a helpful curve to the mix and we all have a chance to get to know each other and our ministries better, praying for each other and listening to each other in love.
The topic this year we planned was “Holy Conversation” with four sessions:
Gathering - The holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Facilitated by Sam Gonzalez.
Word - God speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and in song. Facilitated by Cory Burns
Meal - God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. Facilitated by Tim Rush
Sending - God blesses us and sends us in missions to the world. Facilitated by James Henderson
We were really blessed to have good conversations and although some people may not have fully appreciated the topics it was a wonderful time for many of us to focus on how we can keep on working and doing the best to use our talents that God has given us and continue to work after many years of doing so.
The Lord is working in Mexico mightily and in many ways, liberating people from their sinfulness and social injustice is being righted. Church plants are being made and renewed, AIM students are being mentored, missionary kids are growing up and marriages are being nurtured. All this is done because so many people like you supporters and family that make it all possible, so we thank you and ask that you continue to pray for all the missionaries. Some are planning their move finishing time and others are starting new works, with many in-between. We thank you and pray also that God is blessing and using you in many ways.

Top ten reasons and implications of leadership in my context.
1. Church is not outside of any contexts, we need to realize that context is circumstantial
2. Pay attention to meaning to others in their terms
3. Use the Gospel to bring meaning to some of the narratives from this immediate context
4. Community is not optional, we all participate in one or more communities.
5. Identify the groups or divisions well from the people we are working with, and may be redefine terminology used to identify them correctly.
6. Be as much as possible multy-layered church with race, ethnic, gender, or any other marker.
7. The term "sixth American" - may prompt me to seek to be a holy group apart from the divisions of the world. Individuals are unique.
8. Use the Holy Spirit to lead us on to the next step in our vision
9. Be participant in those moments where things do not make sense
10. Make memories memorable
Recently I have been talking with some leaders about the need to restructure the work being done in church. People need to seek God the Leader to start with him, and end with him. He is our ultimate example of Leadership. And it is incarnated in Jesus, so we can live like him in his Spirit.
Mexican churches are described in law as "religious associations" and must be registered with the Interior Secretariat. Restrictions have been set on what churches and their clergy can say or do with regard to politics. The fact that the overwhelming majority of Mexicans are Catholics has led to complaints from Protestant leaders that they are ignored or misunderstood.
Government figures report 97% of 85 million Mexicans over the age of 5 are Catholic. The country's total population is about 100 million.
The role of churches in Mexico's political life has been controversial throughout the country's history. Constitutional reforms in 1857 saw church property expropriated by the government.
In the wake of the Mexican Revolution, which began in 1910 and was still being fought nearly 20 years later in some parts of the country, the new national government imposed more restrictions on clergy and on the activity of the church.
We must pray for our part in the kingdom.

(The Hunted by Kevin Rolly)
By the Grace of God we are serving his people in Leon. We praise the Lord for our partnership with Jay Tumlinson and the Cameron Church Of Christ. In addition to many individuals and families that make the sacrifice and love us for us to continue to be here.
Life has increased in cost everywhere, 10 to 15% everywhere and the Mexican government predicts that it will go up to 30% by the end of the year.
Our prayer is that we will continue to be able to do ministry in Mexico under whatever circumstances. We have struggled with income this year and we would like for you to know that since this is time to do buggets and plans for next year, we are willing to discuss anything you would like to know in order to continue to support us next year or start support.
On the other hand, we would like to thank you for always reading our reports and posts. We want to remind you that we have a website for further information and pictures.
Also, we would love to see you if you want to make plans to visit us and see the church.
Recently at church we have seen that the members are encouraged, and working hard on their own spiritual walk. They are also extremely excited about working together to be more unified. We see more excitement in their own desire to grow. Our elders are stepping up and working harder at leadership. They are learning and it has been very good for them and the congregation.
Although we wish we could see more youth events happen, we are still praying that leadership for youth will be raised in the next year. We know that the Lord of Harvest will raise more leaders we need.
This week we plan to have another leadership seminar with special guests, my parents, Jose and Maria Palafox. A few churches in the surrounding area and their leaders are coming so we are excited about getting to know them better.
Our family continues to do well. The kids are doing great in school and growing. We hope to see them continue this school year with as much excitement and growth. Once again I am in charge of our retreat for the Mexico missionaries this year and it will be taking place in Xtapa with six or seven different areas in Mexico being represented with all the missionaries that are coming. We will be sharing "Holy Conversation." Churches in Mexico have grown and continual leadership is needed and for this reason it is so important for us as local missionaries to continue to work and learn from each other, spending time together.
Please continue to pray for our growth, small groups, and continue growth of the area churches. We know that you are continuing to sacrifice for us to be here and we are very appreciative of that.
¡Muchas Gracias!

The Lord blessed us with a great week-end. WE had prepared for this time for some months now, and we had some mixed responses. The purpose of the event was to motivate and create conversations about leadership in the church. We invited many people from many churches, but only three churches were present: Leon Sur, Juventino Rosas, and La Libertad. Our invited guess was Jose & Maria Palafox from the El Colli church in Zapopan. He has lead the church locally, regionally and nationally for more then 22 years. His approach to ministry, and especially the need for model leadership was encouraging. The message was from scripture in the first letter to the Thessalonians with highlights from Jesus narratives. Jose Palafox charged us all to be better models in Christ to be, like Paul, good leaders. Also, we shared this during our Sunday Worship.
The work being done in our churches for years now has been focused in evangelism. Campaigns are done to bring people to the church. But after almost 60+ years of the church of Christ being present in Mexico the need for leadership is vital if we believe the church to survive. Our churches are filled with professionals, capable people willing to lead and work in the kingdom. But we have limited them in being preachers only limiting the diversity of gifts given by the Spirit. The need for writers, teachers, apostles, administrators, founders of schools, foundations, non-profits, etc are lacking. This is not to say that they exist in Mexico, it is only to mention that our Churches of Christ need to be willing to be different in our approach to ministry. And only by having time to discuss our duties, passions, and all, we will be a more adapt church to the spirit of the age.
